“The Project Hope Olympic Charity Ride was a fabulous experience and one that I will remember as long as I live. The camaraderie, exposure to the Chinese people and excellent organisation made it a truly memorable event. Seeing the people at one of the schools that the riders and our sponsors have been able to assist was a privilege.” Peter Vial, Project Hope Rider.

The Melbourne Hope School is located in the south east of Tianjin city. Currently there are 486 students in grades 1 – 6.  The money that the Project Hope riders and sponsors have contributed will go towards rebuilding six grade 1 -3 classrooms.  At the welcome ceremony for the riders they met with representatives from the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF), local Government representatives, the Headmaster and some of the students. The riders are thrilled to be able to support this fantastic school and help improve the learning environment for the students.

Jessie’s perspective on the ride

The year 2008 is a special year for every Chinese person and for all Olympians worldwide. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Project Hope Charity Ride and celebrate the Beijing Olympics. I would like to thank David – the instigator, Bill – the organiser and all of the passionate riders.

During the 1,100km ride from Shanghai to Beijing, we crossed the Yangtze River and Yellow River – the two mother rivers of China.

We cycled along the Grand Canal – a man made waterway with over two thousand years of history. We visited the home-town of Confucius – the grandfather of Chinese culture. We climbed Mount Taishan – one of the five famous mountains in China. This was all part of our important ride to raise money for Project Hope.

It was my first time riding a bike. With the help from the other riders, I’ve learnt how to cycle correctly, change gears and lock and unlock my shoes in the pedals. I was very lucky as I did not fall at all. The ride ensured the team developed a great friendship. Bill provided some fantastic commentary on Chinese history and culture enabling the riders to gain a greater appreciation for the real China. I also learnt a great deal about footy from the Aussie riders!

On the eve of the Beijing Olympics, we ended the ride at the first Hope School – Melbourne Hope School. The school is located in the south east of Tianjin city. Due to aging buildings, part of the school is unsafe for use. Some of the funds raised will be used to rebuild the school.

When we arrived at the school, we received a very warm welcome from the students, teachers and schoolmaster. Sitting in the children’s small and simple desks, listening to the speech from David and the schoolmaster, I was deeply touched. I’d like to thank all sponsors for your generous donation. You are helping under privileged children to achieve a better life through education. We will always cherish the friendship between Australia and China.
